Grade 8 Reading
Brighton Middle School in Jefferson County School District began work with Modern Red SchoolHouse in the winter of 2004. In its partnership with Modern Red SchoolHouse, Brighton Middle School was able to increase the proportion of 8th grade students who "met" or "exceeded standards" in reading from 35 percent in 2004 to 55 percent in 2006--an increase of 20 percent. Brighton Middle School's gains were more than triple the district-wide performance gains, and the proportion of students "not meeting standards" in reading for 8th grade was reduced to zero.


Grade 8 Mathematics
In partnership with Modern Red SchoolHouse, Brighton Middle School was able to increase the proportion of 8th grade students who "met" or "exceeded standards" in mathematics from 37 percent in 2005 to 52 percent in 2006--and increase of 15 percent, far exceeding the district-wide gains of 1 percent. (Note: the state of Alabama did not begin testing 8th grade students in mathematics until 2005.
